Available in both sedan and hatchback forms, the Civic has historically been Honda’s most popular model, with over 30 million worldwide sales since its debut.[b] The CR-V has since replaced the Civic atop the Honda sales charts, as buyers increasingly gravitate toward crossover options, but there’s no arguing with this compact car’s credentials.
The Civic was already one of the industry’s best non-hybrid models in terms of fuel economy, with the 10th-generation model offering between an EPA-estimated 33 MPG and 36 MPG combined, depending on which engine you opted for.[c]
That’s a solid showing by any measure, but the brand doubled down on the Civic’s economical appeal with the debut of the 11th-gen model back in 2022. This iteration retained its 2.0L I-4 and 1.5L turbocharged I-4, but a little tinkering now sees the first engine return an EPA-estimated 35 MPG combined, while the latter makes an EPA-estimated 36 MPG combined.[c]
The Civic’s eco-friendly accolades are compelling, but it’s its reputation for reliability that really seals the deal. The Civic has won Kelley Blue Book’s coveted Best Compact Car award a record-setting ten times as of 2026, and it’s regularly featured on Car and Driver’s annual 10Best list.[d] Both publications cite the Civic’s value and low maintenance and repair costs as major factors, and the numbers back it up.
According to RepairPal.com, the Civic is easily one of the segment’s more budget-friendly options, with an average annual repair and maintenance cost of $368.[e] Compare that to the compact class’s average at $526, and it’s easy to see why the Civic is routinely cited as the go-to option for earth-friendly commuters.
Honda Accord
Buyers might be surprised to learn that it’s Honda’s midsize sedan—not its compact—that leads the way in fuel economy. The Accord was one of the first legacy models to adopt hybrid technology, with the first example dating back to 2005. The original Accord Hybrid rode off into the sunset just two years later, but Honda wasn’t about to call it quits on the promising tech. The automaker bided its time, tracking industry-wide trends and emerging technology before eventually introducing the modern Accord Hybrid in 2014.
The 10th-generation Accord Hybrid was powered by a 2.0L I-4, an electric motor, and a lithium-ion battery pack, enabling it to achieve EPA-estimated 48 MPG in the city and 47 MPG on the highway.[c] The hybrid also put a little pep into your step with 212 hp on tap, but Honda wasn’t finished just yet.
The debut of the current 11th-gen model saw the automaker introduce a long list of improvements that enable the hybrid to achieve up to an EPA-estimated 51 MPG in the city.[c] It can be tough to conceptualize average fuel economy in terms of real-world savings, but according to data collected by the EPA, the Accord Hybrid will run Morristown drivers just $1,250 in annual fuel costs, compared to $1,850 for the gas-powered model and the industry-wide average of $2,450.[f]
