You get what you pay for when you shop the used-vehicle market. While there are some good deals to be had, buyers have to be a little wary when picking between pre-owned options. From spotty repair and maintenance records to well-hidden rust, mechanical issues, and worn-out components, it’s a classic case of “buyer beware” with many used models.

Luckily, there’s a clear solution to the used-car conundrum. Taking advantage of a good Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program is one of the easiest ways to access a reliable, value-packed vehicle that’s ready to deliver years of consistent service. That said, not all brands hold their CPO models to the same standard.

Honda’s CPO program provides the kind of value that few of its competitors can match, with generous coverage across three distinct tiers. Let’s dive into the details of the HondaTrue program, compare each offering, and learn how a Certified Pre-Owned Honda adds even more value to the brand’s lineup.

What Is HondaTrue CPO?

Whether you’re in the market for a late-model car, truck, or SUV, a cutting-edge EV, or an older vehicle that’s ready to deliver miles of worry-free driving, there’s a HondaTrue CPO program for you. Instead of saddling buyers with a one-size-fits-all solution, Honda offers three tiers tailored to their budget and driving needs.

Honda has altered its CPO program in recent years, making important changes to better meet the needs of today’s drivers. While the brand did offer a top-tier Certified+ option as recently as 2024, this level was discontinued due to redundancy. The Certified+ tier was virtually identical to the current Certified level, aside from its enhanced bumper-to-bumper coverage, and was intended to cover vehicles less than one year old with fewer than 12,000 miles on the odometer.

There’s just one problem: These newer models are already covered by Honda’s generous new-vehicle warranty program, which includes a three-year, 36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. The Certified+ level’s five-year, 86,000-mile limited warranty didn’t offer much additional coverage and was logically nixed as Honda sought to simplify the program.

That leaves drivers with three CPO tiers to choose from: HondaTrue Certified, HondaTrue Used, and the relatively new HondaTrue Certified EV, which was designed specifically for Honda’s first all-electric model. Let’s take a minute to review each tier and see how the right HondaTrue CPO program can change your automotive experience for the better.

The Three Tiers of HondaTrue

HondaTrue Certified

We’ll start with the brand’s most extensive CPO program, HondaTrue Certified. This policy provides some priceless peace of mind, allowing drivers to hit the road with a new sense of confidence that only a thorough CPO program can provide. HondaTrue Certified models also meet the strictest requirements, with only models that are less than six years old and have fewer than 80,000 miles making the cut.

A HondaTrue Certified model carries the brand’s best possible powertrain coverage, protecting drivers from any costs associated with repairing the engine, transmission, drive axles, and other expensive parts. Honda’s non-powertrain coverage is equally comprehensive, covering everything from the electrical and infotainment systems to climate controls, sensors, steering components, and more.

Requirements:

  • Less than six years old
  • Less than 80,000 miles on the odometer
  • Must pass 182-point inspection

Powertrain Coverage: seven years or 100,000 miles.

Non-Powertrain Coverage: two years or 100,000 miles.

Complimentary Service: Two free oil changes during the first year or 12,000 miles.

HondaTrue Certified EV

The arrival of the 2024 Honda Prologue marked a major milestone for the Japanese brand. While Honda has long been known for its innovative approach to transportation technology, this midsize crossover actually represents its first all-electric model. The Prologue offers unbeatable efficiency, a spacious interior, and plenty of power, but its unique design does require some specialized coverage.

Honda wasted no time in rolling out a new CPO tier specifically for the EV market, with HondaTrue Certified EV entering the fray in 2024. The program is largely identical to the traditional Certified level, but it introduces EV-specific coverage focused on pricey powertrain components like the battery and electric motor.

Requirements:

  • Less than two years old
  • Less than 80,000 miles on the odometer
  • Must pass 167-point inspection

Battery Coverage: eight years or 100,000 miles.

Non-Powertrain Coverage: two years or 86,000 miles.

Complimentary Service: Four tire rotations, four windshield wiper replacements, and one electric drive unit fluid change during the first two years or 24,000 miles.

HondaTrue Used

Want to enjoy the benefits of a CPO program without paying a premium? Honda has you covered with the HondaTrue Used tier. While not quite as exhaustive as the options listed above, HondaTrue Used still represents a substantial improvement over your typical pre-owned model.

HondaTrue Used models tend to be much more affordable than fully-certified options, yet still provide a priceless safety net for drivers wary of unexpected repair bills, malfunctions, and maintenance costs.

Requirements:

  • Less than ten years old
  • No mileage limit
  • No inspection limit

Powertrain Coverage: 100 days or 5,000 miles.

Non-Powertrain Coverage: 100 days or 5,000 miles.

Complimentary Service: One free oil change during the first year or 12,000 miles.

What All HondaTrue Tiers Offer

Now that we’ve covered some of the key differences between each one, let’s take a minute to review how the three HondaTrue CPO tiers are the same. No matter which route you choose, you’ll be able to enjoy a long list of perks that’ll give you a lot less to worry about when you step behind the wheel.

It all starts with complimentary 24/7 roadside assistance, which includes all the expected emergency services like towing, flat-tire changes, fuel delivery, jump-starts, and lockout assistance. This sort of coverage not only helps to address some common worst-case scenarios, but it’ll also keep a little cash in your pocket. While roadside service providers like AAA charge up to $125 for similar coverage, you won’t need to make an additional investment when you opt for a HondaTrue model.

But what about those costs that aren’t strictly car-related? Free towing and flat-tire repair are nice, but a sudden breakdown can hit your wallet in all sorts of ways. Luckily, HondaTrue has you covered with a Trip Interruption policy that includes a $100/day reimbursement for food, lodging, and other unexpected costs. Honda can even arrange car and hotel rentals or taxi use through its included concierge service.

Drivers will also enjoy a $0 deductible on all covered repairs. They can even use their HondaTrue coverage as a valuable bargaining chip when it’s time to move on from their current model, as every HondaTrue policy can be transferred to subsequent buyers. A CPO model is already going to bring a higher price than your run-of-the-mill used model, but that’s especially true when you take advantage of Honda’s comprehensive program.
