The History of the Honda Civic

The history of the Honda Civic is an interesting and eventful one. The first iteration of the Civic came out in 1972; it had a 1.2L engine and a two-speed transmission and was offered in two body types—either a three-door hatchback or a sedan. It hit the market at a poignant time, too, when fuel prices were skyrocketing and drivers were looking to save big money at the pump. In fact, by 1977, the Environmental Protection Agency put the Civic on its list of the most fuel-efficient cars. Throughout the many generations of Civic engines that followed, it got bigger and acquired more powerful engines—and Honda managed to make these engines more fuel-efficient over time while also boosting horsepower.

By the second generation, we got larger engines as well as what would eventually become the Civic S. By the third generation, the Honda Civic was available in a hatchback, a sedan, and wagon body styles; at that time, the Civic shared the wheelbase of the Accord and the Prelude. In 1987, there was a Honda Civic wagon with four-wheel drive—a vehicle that, were it side by side with the modern Civic, you would not realize they were related.

In 1988, Honda released the fourth generation of the Civic, with softer body lines and a more spacious interior as well as more comfort features like intermittent wipers and power windows. The fifth generation brought us tons of new trims and, by 1993, we got a Civic coupe. The sixth generation focused on a larger wheelbase and more fuel-efficient engines; then, by the seventh generation, we saw the addition of sound-insulating materials for this model’s cabin. In 2003, we got the exciting addition of the Civic Hybrid, too; this made the already extremely fuel-efficient compact sedan even better on gas.

The eighth generation brought us a souped-up Civic Si, a performance-oriented Civic; this model is still pursued by enthusiasts. The ninth generation was all about creating a smoother ride, and Honda made a lot of adjustments to the suspension and damping to make this happen. The tenth generation brought us the exciting Civic Type R, another performance sedan that has broken records and won numerous awards.

The Civic lineup today boasts dynamic trims and is still available in a hatchback and sedan body style or as a performance sedan.
